Today I’m featuring the latest book in a series I’ve followed since the first book in the series, Sterling, was published in September 2011. I absolutely loved this unique world Dannika Dark has created and said as much in my review HERE (it was one of the first few reviews I wrote on my blog). Her third book in the Mageri series, Impulse is out and I think it’s the BEST one yet in the series!
Impulse (Mageri #3)
By Dannika Dark
Published October 30th, 2012
Urban Fantasy | Paranormal Romance
My Rating: 5/5
From Goodreads: Almost one year ago, a Mage attacked Silver and changed the course of her destiny. Immortals exist, and now she is one of them.
Within the dark and supernatural city of Cognito, Silver is living under the watchful eye of her Ghuardian and dating her mortal enemy. Neither man can protect her from a dark secret, one buried within the contents of a box. As rival factions struggle to gain control, she finds herself in the middle of a centuries-old feud that threatens to drive a wedge between her and Logan Cross, the man who intends to seduce her.
In an explosive turn of events, one life is saved and another is forever altered. Can Silver trust those around her, or are they hiding a dark secret of their own?
What started out as what I would call a strictly Urban Fantasy series, book three in the Mageri series has become a hybrid of sorts. Dannika Dark balances the action and mystery of a traditional UF with a romantic storyline featuring a hero that if HE doesn’t make your toes curl, I need to check you for a pulse.
This is one series you want to read all the books in order. At the heart of this series is the evolution of Silver into the world of Breed and what she has become. To fully appreciate the storylines and characters, trust me and start at the first book, Sterling and then read Twist. It’ll make this review tricky but I’ll try not to give anything away to spoil the previous books in the series.
Setting / World Building
Impulse has us back in Cognito, the city where the supernatural all like to live and play. We go back to a few other haunts from the past books and leave the city once but the book predominantly stays set in Cognito. Because this series is still an UF, there isn’t much difference between our current world and the book’s world. Except for maybe those pesky Breed…
Holy bad guys!!! I thought Silver had bad guys out for her before. We meet a big nasty from Logan’s past that has it out for Silver. But lucky for her, we meet another new boy in her “harem” of men because this one is assigned to guard her. You just know with Silver’s personality that they get along like oil and water. But I really like this new guy’s take on Silver’s life and he has no problem telling Silver “how it is”.
Speaking of Silver’s “harem” of men. One of the things that had me a little worried in the first book was the amount of men in Silver’s life and the fact that you knew one of them had to be her love interest. Now that we’re at the third book and still adding men, you’d think I would still be worried that Silver’s love life is going to be a big ‘ole mess. Nope! Thank you, Ms. Dark!!! I absolutely LOVE Silver’s relationship that she has with each of the men in her life. From her Ghuardian/Learner relationhip with Justus that is so close to a father/daughter bond to her best guy-friend Simon, every relationship is different, complex, and gets the appropriate attention it needs for the storyline to progress.
Story / Tempo
Impulse continues with the same hunt for the bad guy(s) who are ultimately responsible for Silver being who and what she is. In addition to the heart-stopping action towards the beginning of the book, there’s a lot of time spent on Silver and Logan’s relationship. We learn even more about Logan’s world in a very tense scene played out over a cocktail party involving other women pawing at Logan. I’m still having a hard time believing Logan would let anyone but Silver touch him but hey, that’s why I don’t write the books, I just talk about them. I don’t think I’ve given too much away. Just know that there’s some big time (but well written) tension with Silver and Logan. Oh, and there’s tension between Justus and Silver, but isn’t there always? And there’s tension between Silver and …. you’ll just have to read to find out!!
Overall, the pace and flow was perfect for me! Not once did I really feel like I wanted to put the book down. Something always came up to make me put it down (*sad eyes*).
If you’re looking for a new Urban Fantasy series but you want a bit more romance added in, then you’ll want to add Dannika Dark’s Mageri series to your TBR shelf, pronto!! And if you’re caught up with books one and two, you really want to run out (okay, “run” to Amazon or B&N) and read this one!
When I’m not writing (which is all the time), I’m listening to obscure music, watching movies, reading, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the internet. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I’m not sure which).
Some people count sheep when they have insomnia. Since I was little, I used to make up stories in my head in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I’d get so wrapped up in my “head stories” that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down more and more, creating short stories which evolved into poetry.
Lots and lots of poetry. It’s almost embarrassing that I have an entire box loaded with spiral notebooks filled with furious, heartfelt, and blushing words. Apparently, I had a lot to say.
Another one of my hobbies is digital art. I designed all my book covers.
I am finally doing what I have always wanted to: giving my characters a pulse through publishing. I write adult urban fantasy romance, but I don’t like labels. I let the story tell itself, and color outside the lines. I am not a YA author, but I think it’s pretty great that there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal. These are the future readers!
The work that goes behind self publishing is hard work, I won’t lie. On top of my regular day job: I write, edit, format, create cover art, and market.
But it’s what I love to do, and someday, I’m going to be doing this full time.
Other books in the series:
I have a short excerpt to share with you from Impulse *sigh*. Here’s what makes me swoon for Logan…
Both hands cupped my face and his forehead touched mine.
“I was made to protect you, female. I’ve claimed you, whether you accept it or not, and it’s an honor that I take very seriously. If any male lays an unwanted finger on you, I will break it. If you hunger, I will feed you. If you’re cold, then I will warm you with my body. If you’re taken from me, then I’ll track you. Never doubt my devotion to you.” He gripped my head firmly. “I once gave a woman my heart, because that’s all I had to give. But you, Silver, you’re the pulse that keeps me alive. I was a soft man once, but no more. I don’t know if you can accept the man that I’ve become, because all I have to offer you is my life.”
