Jamb tour

Disclaimer: I’m a huge fan of the Misty Provencher’s Cornerstone series.  Way back last fall, I joined a read-a-long for the first book, Cornerstone, because Christy at Christy’s Love of Books told me that the book was really good and that I should give it a try.  I devoured the second book before the read-a-long for the first was done.  And then I waited…

I won’t make you wait!  Here’s a super special excerpt that I requested from Ms. Provencher because I thought it showcased her incredible ability to write fight scenes AND it gives you a glimpse into the relationship between Nalena (aka Nali) and Garrett.  Nali would be the narrator.  Remember to breathe when it’s over…

Excerpt

I step into one of Garrett’s punches and twist out of his range only at the last second.  He spins me and I drop backward.  Off balance, I expect to crash into him, but the back of my head falls right into his waiting palm; my eyes travel up his chest to his soft gaze; his body dips over me and then his long kiss, strokes from my throat to my collarbone before he pushes me back onto my feet again.

I slide in close and try to land a jab to his stomach, but I miss.  He throws a hook that slides past my face and I turn back at the last millisecond, my lips making a damp trail from his cheekbone to his ear.

“Fight harder,” I whisper.  “Don’t you want to know?”

We speed into the violent dance.  We spin, harder and harder, coming together although we can never land an actual blow, until I swear I am melting right into Garrett and he is melting into me.  It’s like I can feel him moving beneath my skin, his hands touching me inside, cradling around my heart, tickling my stomach.  I laugh and throw my head back.  Nothing feels as good as Garrett does in my veins.  When I look back at him, he’s laughing wildly too.

“C’mon, Rebel, let’s go all the way.  Don’t hold anything back.”

I am positive nothing can happen now.  I can feel him deep in my bones.

I will not tell you why they are fighting or what Nali ‘wants to know’.  But suffice it to say, this excerpt is from pretty far into the book and has just a little significance (understatement, understatement, understatement).  Thank you SO FREAKIN’ much for letting me share one of my favorite parts of the book, Misty!!!!

About the book:

A second ago, Nalena opened her eyes.
And she was safe in Garrett’s arms.
Then it all comes rushing back—the riots, The Fury, the Cusp. The Ianua community is in a major jam.

Forced into survival mode, the Ianua are holed up in the fortress of the Hotel Celare. Each Cura’s top-ranking members have gathered to guard the last remaining Addo, as the entire community also scrambles to trust one another and organize a new game plan to overthrow The Fury. The trick is to keep the human race alive.

But The Fury’s game has changed. They have a Mastermind at the helm and he is out to destroy the Ianua.

Terrifying and brilliant, this mysterious Mastermind has organized and focused The Fury like never before. He has recruited the Simple and unleashed the Cusp’s wide-spread chaos all around the world. And behind the scenes of this big picture, Nalena and everyone around her are busy trying to keep up, while also absorbing the rapid-fire aftershocks of their changing lives. There are traitors everywhere.

While The Cusp is expected to bring twists and turns, Nalena and Garrett never expected it to throw a silverware-drawer full of forks into the road. Each path tests their loyalty and their faith and makes them question who is who.

Including themselves.
And each other.
And in the end, some things, you can never see coming.

Keystone, book two in the Cornerstone series, ended somewhat on a cliff hanger.  All I knew is that I had to have book three immediately.  If you’ve been keeping up with the series, you probably know what I’m talking about.  After keeping Nali and Garrett apart for most of the book, BANG!  The book ends.  I don’t think I’ve given anything away if you haven’t read the series yet so hang in there… I’ll keep my review spoiler free (I hate spoiler reviews so I always try to avoid them).

Setting / World Building

Picking up right where Keystone left off, we are back in the middle of riots and utter chaos.  Nali exhaustively collapses in Garrett’s arms and wakes up to find out her world is turned upside down and has to learn what has happened while her body was recuperating.  This is our opportunity, as a reader, to get refreshed on what happened in the last book and recall who’s who and what’s what.  I’m going to come right out and spill why I knocked off 1/2 a star from my review: this series is heavily laden with world specific terminology that begs to be listed in a glossary for reference.  Since it had been a while since I read Keystone and I didn’t have time to do a re-read (oh, the horror!) I was rusty on my Cornerstone world building.  I was somewhat lost in translation for the first 30% of the book.  Some of the terms came back to me, some I kind of let flow right over my head, like        .

If Ms. Provencher is too buried in her writing (and yes, she should be!  I most humbly demand it), I might just have to do the “Unofficial Guide to the Cornerstone Series” 😀  Yes, I can be THAT geeky…

Story / Tempo

So, I’m trucking along, enjoying Nali getting caught up with everything that is happening.  Now, this series has been pretty action and banter balanced up to this book.  But I’m getting to about the halfway point of the book and I’m thinking to myself, “Misty, what have you done?  Nothing is happening!!!  This is just a bunch of yappity-yap going on and I already see what’s going to happen!”.   It was right after I thought this that…

WHAM!!!  Smack me upside my head!!!!  Holy cows (yes, more than one).  Who am I to question Misty Provencher?!?!?!

And we’re off!  Everything written in the beginning is actually extremely pivotal to absolutely everything in the end.  It is one huge set up to a web of who is your enemy and who is your friend.  At times the story is so heart wrenching to read, I just needed to get to the end for the happy ending.  Um….  sort of?

Characters

Nali is still only a year into her new life so of course she is still learning everything.  She’s not quite as savvy as the Reese boys and I kind of like that about her.  She goes with her gut most times and it works for her 8 times out of 10.  But she is brutally human, makes mistakes, and she owns it.  She’s honest about how she feels and I like that about her.  Garrett is so amazing.  They really are a perfect couple.  He’s reserved and calculating, she’s over the top with her feelings most times.  Like he always tells her, she broadcasts loudly 🙂  Oh, my heart is still aching from some of the scenes in the book.

You definitely see more of the Reese brothers in this book, especially Sean.  I think Sean fans will be pretty surprised by him in this book.  He’s really becoming a pivotal character to the series and I can’t wait to see what he does in the next book!!  Ms. Provencher can’t turn books out fast enough for me…

So overall, this book is STILL sitting hard on my heart.  I absolutely loved it.  I am completely smitten with Nali and Garrett’s relationship and it can’t move fast enough for me.  The world is so incredibly unique in it’s structure and one could say that the 2 fractions, the Ianua and the Fury, represent the delicate balance our world as a whole teeters on today – if one was to get all existential and stuff.  Me?  Give me romance and a good fight scene and I’m in Heaven!  Misty ~ write faster, damn it!!!!
