About the book:

He left to travel the world for fame and glory, but only after spurning Gabby Ward and crushing her young heart. Now Hunter Markham has come back home to the sand and salty breeze of the North Carolina Outer Banks so he can open up Last Call, a beach bar nestled among the dunes of the Atlantic.

Gabby Ward is not happy that Hunter has returned. Bitter over his rebuff years before, she’s content to stay far away from him and his dangerously charming ways.

Gabby’s well-schemed plans to ignore Hunter go up in flames when he presents an offer to her that she simply can’t refuse, throwing them together in a common quest to each reach their goals. Working together day in and day out proves to be problematic for Gabby, who soon realizes that the feelings she had for him are still very much alive. Hunter struggles to reach through to Gabby’s cold heart, all while starting a new career away from his life as a top ranked, professional surfer.

What starts out as a mutual business arrangement soon turns into a passion that neither of them can continue to deny.

Hard choices lay ahead for both of them when Hunter is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to the pro surfing tour.

Choices that could destroy what they have built or take them further than they ever had dared to hope.

New adult stories seem to be coming out the woodwork these days, don’t they?  I’ve read my share.  I might be slightly addicted.  But I’d like to think I have some taste and can tell crap from the good stuff.  Oh, and I do have favorites.

I’m hear to announce the addition of a new favorite (cue the fanfare): Sawyer Bennett!  Don’t know her stories yet?  Let me share with you what to expect when you pick up On the Rocks, the first book in her new Last Call series.  See there?  I like to be optimistic.  Yeah, I know not everyone likes new adult romances.  New adult is an acquired taste.  But Ms. Bennett’s story is such a great example of new adult romance that if you were to try new adult, this would be a great place to start.

Gabby and Hunter’s story starts with a flashback to Gabby’s high school graduation night with a kiss gone slightly wrong.  Flash forward five years to today and we meet Gabby as she gets ready to pitch a job bid to her best friend’s older brother, Hunter.  Gabby is running her father’s construction company and struggling to gain new business as a female contractor.  It’s a last ditch effort that she’s bidding on a job at Hunter’s new bar, Last Call.

It’s a classic story of crushing on the best friend’s older brother.  But where this story stands out is Ms. Bennett’s thoroughly developed characters.  Without spending boring amounts of time on internal self-analysis by the characters, I completely understood the character’s personality and could even anticipate how the characters would react to situations.

By the way, this story is dual point of view – LOVE!!!!

Even towards the end, where you know surprises abound, the characters held true.  I found that actually quite refreshing and frankly… AWESOME.  No dumb chicks in this book!  I can say no more.  I noticed some reviewers thought Gabby was kind of dumb when it came to her decisions about Hunter.  I saw the reason for everything Gabby did.

One of my favorite lines from the book…

Another thing about Ms. Bennett: she’s a mighty fine writer!  I became immersed in the dialogue, the visuals, and all the descriptions of the “action” taking place.  I could easily picture and understand everything that was happening every moment in the book.  It was absolutely like I had a movie going on in my head.  Did it help that I was familiar with the setting (Avon, Hatteras Island, Kitty Hawk)?  Perhaps…  still a movie, though!

One of the characters that was prominent in this story was Brody, Hunter’s twin brother.  His story is next and I absolutely CAN NOT wait for it.  Again, characters, characters, characters….

Make it a Double (Last Call #2) appears to be coming out March 31st, 2014.
