About the book:

Olivia Beckett’s once-charmed life is falling apart. Her family is about to lose everything, and she has almost no chance of continuing her college education. She can’t even seek solace from her high school sweetheart. He’s changed. She doesn’t recognize the boy she used to know— his violent behavior is escalating and it scares the hell out of her. Her whole world is crumbling, and she has no one to turn to……

Sebastian “Bash” McDaniels is an up and comer in the boxing world working nights at the local college bar until he can land the fight of his dreams that will get him the hell out of Boston and away from his family’s tragic past. He’s weeks from his goal when Olivia Beckett comes tumbling into his life in a flash of silky dark hair and haunted eyes. When he saves her from a potentially brutal beating, they begin to grow close, but Olivia’s ex isn’t ready to let her go so easily.

Bash can’t bring himself to walk away, but fixing Olivia just might leave him broken…

Serials are the new thing in releasing some books these days.  I don’t usually go for serials; I usually wait for the full book to release.  Call me cheap…

But then this review opportunity came along.  I was terribly interested in the story itself so I thought I’d give it a try, despite my hostility towards cliffhangers.  Olivia and Sebastian’s story just suckered me in.

Olivia is away at school and feeling disconnected from her family back home and their financial troubles.  It’s pretty bad and she’s not even sure if she’ll be able to continue in college next semester.  On top of that, her boyfriend of three years is turning out not to be the high school sweetheart she thought him to be.

Sebastian, or “Bash”, is temporarily working in a college campus bar while he trains for a big boxing match.  Olivia literally bumps into Bash and then later, he comes to her rescue when her boyfriend threatens physical violence towards Olivia.

For being only a third of the entire story, Ms. Bell managed to jam quite a bit of plot into this portion of the serial.  You’re not going to see a huge amount character development but instead enjoy a ton of story and action.  By the time I got to the end, I was out of breath and astounded at all that had happened in just 74 pages.

And of course, there is a cliff hanger.  But this story works so well with the serial format, the cliffhanger just isn’t that painful to me.  I expected it so it didn’t hurt as much.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m wiggling in my seat waiting for the “second book” in this serial to come out so I can find out what happens next.  But when you’re expecting the “pain”, it isn’t so bad 😉

I think overall I’ve changed my mind on serials.  If it has a small amount of “books” or “titles” in the series (like in this serial), is in your favorite genre (loving new adult romance these days!), then you might want to give the serial a chance.  You might not regret it!

I seriously CAN NOT wait for the next book in the McDaniels Brothers Series, Fix You, Bash and Olivia Book Two, due out later in April.

  1. Yeah … I’m not a fan of the serial trend at all. I don’t even care for novellas to begin with, so blah. However, I have read a couple of good ones. I absolutely won’t read them until all are out though. Hell I’m starting to not even read a first book (full size) in a series until at least the 2nd book is out or close to being out. So, this book/serial does sound good, but I’ll wait for all 3 parts.
