About the book:

New grad Anna Richardson works hard—so hard that she’s given up having a romantic life. Anna has even convinced her friends that she’s dating an amazing guy—who they’ve simply never met. But now Anna has a wedding to attend and needs to produce the hottie she’s been lying about for the past six months. Enter Jake Flynn, her infuriating, motorcycle-riding, jaw-droppingly gorgeous neighbor, who’s more than willing to fake it for a weekend. In fact, Jake won’t be satisfied until things get real.

Though Jake is only playing the role of adoring boyfriend, he’s starting to feel the heat, and judging by Anna’s sweet blush, so is she. Letting chemistry this intense go to waste would be a real shame. Soon, though, the thin line between fantasy and reality fades. Jake may not be what every buttoned-up fast-tracker wants, but he’s sure as hell what Anna needs. And if she takes a ride with him, their adventure never has to end.

I love “fake” boyfriend scenarios.  I have NO clue why!  It’s cheesy, it’s over done, but it’s my guilty pleasure.  You’d think I’d be sick of them.  Nope.  It was what actually drew me to this story!  But how would this story be different than all the others?  Take a cheesy literary device, add in complete opposite personalities with scorching physical attraction, sprinkle it with a touch of childhood drama, a touch of nasty ex-boyfriends and you get a sweet HEA for Anna and Jake, promise!

Anna was introduced in the first book of the Rule Breakers series as the buttoned-up workaholic.  She’s good at what she does but that also means that she gets taken advantage of.  If she wants to keep moving up in the company, she’s got to keep saying “yes” to all the work coming her way.  It doesn’t help that her ex-boyfriend works with her and uses and abuses his position to work his way back into her life.

To avoid the hassle of dealing with him and Anna’s best friend who won’t give up on trying to fix her up with guys, Anna has invented the “perfect boyfriend”.  Anna had hoped that would stop these two from meddling in her love life.  Unfortunately, it hasn’t.  This was one part of the story that absolutely drove me nuts.  Anna’s best friend was obnoxiously relentless with fixing Anna up with guys.  Even after Anna brought Jake to the wedding “weekend”.  If she really was a best friend, she would have actually listened to Anna and not just did whatever she thought Anna needed.  I think Ms. Chance could have built on this in the story but it was glossed over in the end – or I missed it, which is entirely possible, knowing me.  With a bestie like that, who needs enemies?

Jake was a fantastic character.  If you like guys who are genuine, live in the moment, and don’t do anything they don’t want to do, you’ll love Jake Flynn.  He lives his own life, fixing bikes all over the United States.  He’s noticed Anna walking in front of his garage for the past six months and he finally sees an opportunity to get close to her.  He’s a guy that sees something he wants and goes for it.  Love. Him.

Ms. Chance is a great writer, too!  She kept Jake’s character consistent throughout the entire book.  Heck, all the characters were consistent, except maybe the ex-boyfriend, but of course his true colors were just surfacing by the end of the book.

The pace of the book was good and I only got slightly bored during some of Anna’s self-reflection dialogues.  She seemed to be rolling over the same thoughts frequently.  Eh, I must have old lady ADD or something…

Either way, not much will stop me from continuing on with this series.  I really do enjoy Ms. Chance’s original and entertaining stories.  The fact that she writes well and uses multiple POVs doesn’t hurt either (you know I love my multiple POVs).

Not to distract you but the next book in the series is Want It and it’s Erin’s story (YAY!).  Erin is the artist of the four friends.  I didn’t mention that part about the series, did I?  OOPS!  Each book features one of four best friends.  There, I’ve mentioned it 😉

Want It is expected out November 2014. Risk It is expected March 2015.  Now that’s the story I’m waiting for…   Okay, I’m done, you can move on to the SCORCHING excerpt 🙂

Warning: This isn’t for the kiddies!  You’ve been warned 😉

[note note_color=”#D3BDAF”]“Where in God’s name did you get this dress?” he asked. “It’s absolutely perfect on you.”

“You like it?” Anna didn’t care that the question was stupid, she just wanted to hear Jake say more of these wonderful things to her, to believe all of this was real, if only for tonight.

“I love it,” Jake replied with feeling. “But that’s not going to stop me from pulling it off of you later. Kiss me,” Jake urged her. He bent his head down and Anna stretched up, deliberately dragging her body up his. Jake groaned and she snatched the sound from his lips as their mouths connected. His lips were sensually soft. They moved against hers with rhythmic power as he buried a hand in her hair, gathering it tightly as he crushed her against him. Jake surrounded her with his long, hard body, his powerful arms. His legs pressed against her thighs as she lost herself in the kiss. Gasping for breath, her tongue slid forward and met his. Electricity shot through her, fusing them together.

The power she felt in that moment almost undid her. It was heady, pulsing, and it sizzled in her fingertips as they lay on Jake’s hard, shuddering body. She tilted her head to the side, her eyes now on his lips, as if savoring the thought of them, aching to taste them again. Then Jake’s left hand left the small of her back, and shifted downward, his kiss intensifying even as small whorls of delicious panic started skittering along Anna’s nerves. He started pulling the fabric of her dress again, scrunching it in his fingers, but this time he didn’t stop until its hem cleared her upper thighs, and then there was only his hand against her skin as he slid it beneath the fluttery skirt. Anna froze, paralyzed by the reaction of her body to his hand on her thigh, so close to everything that was going wild with heat and panic, his fingers splayed against the edge of her silk thong, tracing the edge.

“Nice,” Jake breathed, and Anna moaned as his hand cupped the roundness of her bottom again. The feel of his rough palm against her sensitive skin crowded out any other thoughts. He began stroking her, the rhythm adding to the crescendo thrumming inside her belly. Anna’s heart began to race, the pounding of her pulse keeping time with the crashing need she felt. She put both of her hands on Jake’s face, branding his mouth with hers, pressing hard into him as he swelled against her, his breath growing ragged.

“Jake,” she gasped, not knowing how to say it, not knowing how to ask him for what she wanted, what she craved so deeply that it seemed to redefine her being. The aching desire came from her body, yes, but also from her brain, her heart, her nerves—everything. She felt as if this was the one opportunity to make everything happen perfectly, and she dared not miss this chance. It created a need so powerful she wanted to cry, to call out, to shred his clothes with her fingers—anything so that he wouldn’t stop. “Please … I want … please,” she moaned, and he gripped her tightly to him, grazing her face, her jaw, the dip of her collarbone with his mouth, his kisses becoming more urgent.

“I will, Anna,” he said, speaking the words like an oath. He met her gaze then, and the war between them raged for a few seconds more. What was it she saw in his eyes … and what was she betraying with her own? This wasn’t actually a thing between them. It couldn’t be. He was a fake and she was a liar, and this perfect night was nothing more than an illusion. She knew it, he knew it, they both knew it. So what was happening here? [/note]

That excerpt WAS hot, huh? I’ve really got to re-vamp my blog so there’s more separation between my adult reviews and my YA reviews! Yeah, that’s on the planning table… someday… 🙂

  1. My guilty pleasure is the enemies turned lovers scenario so I totally understand where you’re coming from! I enjoy fake boyfriend scenarios too and your review made me want to get to know Jake cause he seemed like a great hero to a workaholic heroine like Anna. I’m really interested with the romance, but I would have to keep in mind the meddler best friend because her character will annoy the hell out of me. But despite a few minor negatives, I’m glad you still enjoyed this book and it won’t stop you for continuing on to the next best friend.

This is the first I’ve heard of this series and the author so I’m going to check the first book and this one out! And I have book ADD too! You are not alone! Awesome review 🙂

Oooo, enemies to lovers!! Another great theme!! What I like about this one was that Anna didn’t want to like Jake, she really just wanted to oggle him from afar and if she could have hired someone to play the fake boyfriend, she might have. Jake and circumstances wouldn’t let Anna get away with that 🙂

I think I first wanted to read Jennifer because she lives in my home state and I always support “local” authors 😉 Between Michigan and Ohio (I live in one and I’m from the other) we have a boat load of great authors 🙂

  2. Kristin, thank you so much for hosting me on your site and for your review! Little known fact: some of the characters were based on real people… including the bestie. She meant well, though! 🙂

I’m delighted you enjoyed FAKE IT! And thanks for the shout outs for WANT IT and RISK IT!

Melissa, Amir and Stacey… thank you for posting as well! I really enjoyed writing this story, so if you check it out, I hope you find it a fun summer read.
