My name is Milo Caro and I have a confession to make. I’ve been in love with Colton Mathews since I was five. He should have known that sharing a cookie with a sugar obsessed little monster would do the trick – it sealed his fate. So really, the fact that he’s sporting a black eye, a limp, almost got ran over by a car, and was nearly responsible for another person’s death? Right. HIs fault. Not mine.

I made a pact with myself–this weekend would be different. I’d come home for my brothers wedding, smile, and Colton would naturally melt into my arms, we’d get married have five kids, live in a house by the river, and get a dog named scratch (clearly I’ve thought this through).

What really happened? I punched my brother in the face, Colton kissed me and apologized, I lied about having a boyfriend, oh and everyone wants to meet the mystery man.

They say laughter always comes before insanity–ha, ha. All I wanted was my brother’s best friend…instead I’m sitting in prison.

Let this be a lesson to you all…life rarely happens the way you want it to.

Damn cookie.

This is going to sound weird but I read the first two books in Rachel Van Dyken’s Consequence series out-of-order ON PURPOSE and I have no regrets!  It most likely changed the mood and tone of each story for me.  But I have to say that after reading the first book, I’m so glad I got to know Max in his book first and then got to know Colton and Milo in their book afterwards.  It probably won’t make sense unless you’ve already read the books.  I’ll try to explain, though.

If you haven’t read either book, let me first share a little bit about the first book with you.  “The Consequence of Loving Colton” is told in mostly Milo and Colton’s point of views.  Milo has been in love with Colton, her older brother’s best friend, since they were kids.  But Milo was always “Jason’s sister” (ain’t that the way it always is?).  After four years away at college, Milo is dreading coming home for her brother’s wedding and seeing Colton after so long.  Can she handle it?  Not without casualties.

Hi-jinks start immediately in chapter one as Milo discusses the intense dilemma of getting out of her car once she arrives home with her best friend Max over the phone.  Be prepared for mundane tasks made hilariously huge and catastrophic.  There is a plot behind the story of Colton and Milo getting together.  It’s a doozy of a wedding weekend planned at Jason and Milo’s childhood home.  I kind of thought the over-the-top antics slightly overshadowed the love story at times.  But there is a love story there, woven in between some wedding intrigue, lies, crazy old ladies, drinking, and unrequited love.

Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed this story and it was mostly because of the banter between the characters.  They were constantly having to solve problems and get out of messes and their conversations were laugh out loud hysterical.  I was a sucker for anytime Max graced the pages, though.  He is one smart cookie, that one!  Granted, he carries around narcotics to knock people out but hey, you never know when you might need them!

I recommend this book for anyone who wants a quick, romantic, not-at-all-serious read; people who take life too seriously need not apply (errrr, enjoy).

Now, to meet my man, Max…

Warning: don’t read the synopsis below if you REALLY don’t want spoilers for the first book!

After losing his best friend to another guy, the notoriously too-confident Max Emory suddenly feels lost. He may have devastatingly good looks, an abundance of charm, and a claim to one of the biggest hotel empires around, but he has no ambition anymore. So when his fed-up friends decide they've had enough of his moping, they sign him up to be the next bachelor on the reality series Love Island. And between his pride and his forged signature on an ironclad contract, Max just can't say no.

Now he's stranded in paradise with twenty-four women, one terrifying goat, and Becca, the breathtaking barista who already turned him down back home. The closer Max gets to Becca, the more determined he becomes to win her over. As she gets to know him better, things start heating up. But is Becca really after Max's heart--or is she after the cash prize she could claim once the cameras stop rolling?

Oh, my tortured Max…

So, I mentioned that I read this book before “…Loving Colton”.  Yes, I probably didn’t get as many jokes as I might’ve gotten had I read the first book.  But I still laughed my ass off plenty.  I also got to know Max all by himself.  It made me so empathetic towards him.  Looking back now, I think it would have been a different book to me had I read the first book.  But this way, I fell head over heels in love with Max.  He is (IMHO) THE perfect guy!!  Love, love, loved this story!!

So, we have Max, who is rich and never has to work a day in his life.  So he’s not.  He’s sitting around doing nothing during the day.  At night, he’s picking up chicks at the bars.  His friends see his life derailing and have performed an “intervention” by signing him up (illegally, of course) for a Bachelor-type show on an island where he can meet his soul mate.  Their thoughts are this: it will give him a chance to think about what he wants to do with his life.  He’s pretty much like, “whatever, guess I’m stuck”.

THIS story so completely lends itself to the over-the-top hi-jinks that made me giggle non-stop through it.  Okay, wait, that’s a lie.  There was MORE romance in this story than in the first book!  HOT!  And not just because of the jungle.  I was doing some swooning in between laughing.

And just so you know, I confirmed with my hubs that the “guy talk” happening in this book is really how guys talk!  I had to ask because it was too funny to be believed.

I highly recommend this book for ANYONE wanting romance with a laugh!  Don’t let “The Bachelor” storyline or the “good-looking rich guy” turn you away.  I hate The Bachelor-type shows; they make me queasy to my stomach.  And the fact that Max has money plays very little into the story, other than that he can get things easily.

Did I mention he has an older brother?  NO?  Tee, hee…  he’s almost as smart as Max but apparently better looking.  You’ll meet him in the first book but he’s better in this one!
