Sunday Post #58: I’ve Got a Dark Side and I Kind of Like It

The Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer and it’s a chance to showcase new books and re-cap your week of blogging.

I was pretty busy this week!  My 9 year old son had two of his baby teeth pulled to allow his permanent teeth to “float” forward into their proper places.  This is all in preparation for the braces he’ll for sure have to get.  I appreciate that they start braces younger than they did when I was a kid.  I was 18 when I finally got my braces off.  My son won’t have to deal with first dates with braces on his teeth.

Did you attend the NetGalley Challenge Webinar this past Tuesday?  I thought it was actually very beneficial for me.  It wasn’t preachy like other review writing events I’ve attended (cough, cough LibraryReads/Edelweiss cough, cough) and I can always use fresh ideas for writing reviews.  I definitely appreciated the ideas for getting publishers to notice my reviews on NetGalley, too.  If you missed the webinar, you’ll find it archived on NetGalley’s blog.

The other webinar I attended is one I usually always attend – Booklist’s YA Announcements: Fall 2015.  I LOVE to hear the publishers talk about upcoming books.  It’s always interesting to see which books they’re heavily promoting and to get background information on some of the books.

Bright Shiny New Books

So why do I consider myself evil?   Because I saw some great reviews for a few books so I, uh…

This is hard to say out loud!  I almost hate to admit I did this, but, ummmmm…

…it so not in the “blogger-code” or some such nonsense, uhhh…

…but I went on NetGalley and Edelweiss and got review copies for the books.  Why do I feel so evil?  I have no clue!

A huge thank you to Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, HarperCollins, and HMH Books for Young Readers!

Last week I totally forgot to include this Audible audio book that was gifted to me out of the clear blue sky!

My Life As a White Trash Zombie

I received this from Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer mostly, I think, to shut me up about my cluelessness about the appeal of this series.  I was like, “She’s a zombie, she’s dead, what more could there be?”  Clearly I’m an idiot because this audio is freakin’ fantastic!!!  I highly recommend listening to this one because the narrator is unbelievably entertaining with her accent and perfect reading!  I giggle out loud continuously while listening to this.  Thank you tons, Kimba!!!

Have a fabulous week!

I have been listening to our favorite crazy brain craving zombie! I’m not far, though. I’m still struggling with finding time to zone out on my boy – it’s a tough one! And yes, the ice cream is helping me tons!!

      Oh, you mean Jake…

  1. Damn, they do start braces young. Thankfully my son never needed them, because I have a feeling he would’ve been a pain in the ass about them. Why feel dirty about downloading the review copies? I did it this week too. I mean, hell, I was sent the email for them and decided to read them after I read other reviews, so why not? They aren’t archived and some aren’t even available for purchase yet.. Omg, but you got Riders, so you ARE evil. And c’mon, you should know not to question our taste in books, especially when it comes to zombies. 😉

I have no clue why I haven’t heard of Riders yet but it sounded awesome! And I was only trolling thru Macmillan’s catalog… talk about a lucky find!!!

I’m feeling guilty about these two books b/c I think I purposely looked for the review books so I wouldn’t have to pay for them… there, now you made me say it!!! I’m not in it for the books!! Noooooo!!! Really, I’m not…. okay, maybe a wee bit…. ugh…

  2. Ah, braces. I hated those bad boys… I didn’t go in for all that so I had to wear them longer! LOL… not fun.

That Booklist one looks interesting, I’ll have to keep an eye for that…

I did, too!! No teeth pulled on me but I had them for 4 grueling High School years. Can you say drool?!?!? blech!

  3. LOL about the White trash zombie ! I used to wear braces, so I empathize. I know how you feel about Netgalley, I did that once and it felt like cheating – however, they gave me the book freely and I did my duty, reviewed it, so I don’t understand. Ah well ! I loved the female protagonist of Black rainbow, but the guy ? Not so much. It’s just my gut feeling though, I know others who lurved it. Have a great weekend 😉

I saw you were one of the girls who had read the book when I added it to my TBR!!! I saw all the good reviews before and I was just waiting for the price to drop. When it never did I sucked it up and bought it this week 🙂 Wow, I pick all the wrong words to use, don’t I? tee, hee, I’m like 10 yrs old!

  4. Oh I hadn’t heard about a NetGalley Webinar. I quite enjoy it and am yet to work out how Edelweiss words (even though apparently there’s a book there someone shared that’s waiting for me there!).

    Have a lovely week!

Thanks for stopping by! Riders totally caught my eye when I was trolling and then I read the synopsis and I was a goner!!

I’m a long time fan of Kim Harrison; I’ve been to 4 of her book signings b/c she lives “nearby”. She is an awesome writer!!!!

    • K

I love that narrator’s voice – everytime she swears she sounds so nice doing it! How is that possible?!?!?

    • K

WTZ is so awesome! I never knew what I was missing… I’m an idiot for poo-pooing the series!

      I almost missed Riders… almost 😉

  5. I have to make the dreaded journey to the dentist with my daughter, she lost her tooth a few months ago and no tooth has appeared at all. I am thinking she will need braces also. The front tooth is shifting way to far over.

It’s not evil it’s an addiction that we all need to embrace 😉

I missed the Netgalley webinar but they have it recorded so I plan to watch it this week, I don’t know how I missed it but I got the email saying it happened already but never got the email saying when it was suppose to be.

Enjoy all your new books! They look fantastic! Have a great week, Kristin! ox

Awww…. are you sure you don’t want to wait for your daughter? It may still come in??? Well, at least it’s not your boy… You know how my boy is. I had to hug him while they put him under. UGH, I hate to see him out like that. I dread the dentist with him, they have yet to polish any more then 2 teeth on him. Eh, such is life with out kidlets 🙂 Could be worse… a lot worse! We are blessed!

      Take it easy girl!!! xo!!!!!!

  6. Our oldest had to have 2 rounds of braces and it was not fun for any of us! Hopefully your son will have an easy time of it. I had to have a bunch of baby teeth pulled when I was a kid for the same reason and it wasn’t too bad. Great books this week! I really want to give Jennifer Ryan a try. I’ve heard great things about her books. Somehow I missed the Netgalley webinar. I got a lot out of the one they had last year and will have to go find this one. Have a great week!

TWO rounds!!! I hope they didn’t charge you twice!! What the heck!? Sounds like me, though… I never did the rubber bands and I never wore the head gear. Retainer? What retainer? Ha!!

Kimba reviewed Ryan the other day and the story sounded sweet so I ran and grabbed it off Edelweiss before it was archived. It’ll be a first for me, too!!!

    • K

I’m staying away from NG right now but Edelweiss is where I go nutso. I really could go nutso in NG… oh could I ever!!!!!!!

      Have a great week!!!

  7. Wohoooo! Congrats on your fab book from Kimba! I’m looking forward to reading the Zombie because everyone seems to have loved it but also I’m kinda nervous for that reason too because us ally hyped up books and I don’t get along. Hehe and I hope your son can get braces (although he probably won’t want them on his first date) but if it’ll help with his teeth…well, kind of in between a rock and a hard place on that one. Teehee

  8. This is my first time taking part in The Sunday Post! Hi 🙂

I have Sideswiped! I haven’t read it yet but I’m looking forward to, and for when The Drafter comes out. The other books on your list, I haven’t heard of. So I’ll check them out 🙂

Hi Natalie and welcome!!! It is a total fluke I was at the top of the list – you’ll never see me there again 🙂 Everyone does both Saturday and Sunday’s posts so you’re not alone!!

My book tastes are all over the place! I just trolled Edelweiss the other day so I picked up a few YA that I missed and then the cowboy one is all Kimba’s fault.

      Thanks for visiting!!

  9. You’re only now discovering the White Trash Zombie? Where have you been?!?!?! 😀 It’s a fun series and well done. 🙂

And as for those review copies, I can’t imagine a blogger doing such a thing *whistles* 😛

I missed both webinars because I was working. I’m glad they were good!

You are so funny *sarcasm set at 10* I’m a moral blogger and I’ll leave it at that (what the HELL is a moral blogger?!?!?! bwahahahahahaha!!) Hey, do you want the Booklist slides with the publishers and the books? I have the followup email if you didn’t get it 🙂

I resisted WTZ b/c hey, she’s just a dead person… yeah, I’m eating crow on this one!!! “Holy Shit!” I love when the narrator says that!!!

    • K

I can’t wait to read Jennifer Ryan!! I blame that pick up on Kimba! She reviewed that book and I quickly ran to Edelweiss and it was still there. I need a sweet cowboy romance right about now 😉 Thanks for the vote of confidence on her!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • K

I only had one kid so I only had to do this “kid” thing once – phew! This is hard work, I have no clue how anybody does more kids. How do they afford them??? tee, hee…

  10. Braces start so young. I still have a long time with my kids still thankfully. You have so many good books this week. I am drooling a bit over First & Then – Can’t wait to hear what you think. I am guilty of doing what you say on NG and EW. But I mean I read and review it so it is what it is right??? Have a great week!

I know, I read and review it but still, I looked b/c I didn’t want to pay for it. Oh, well, it’s all your fault anyways 😀

  11. Scare-mongering about how women are inevitably going to lose their marbles and their physical capability is as bad as all those sexist, ageist tweets post-Madonna’s tumble. Have I been planning ahead for my own demise, when I can no longer play Beethoven from memory on my piano?
