I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Tough-as-steel cop Curran O’Brien is quickly rising through the ranks of the Philadelphia police department. But when his rookie partner is almost killed under his watch, Curran just wants to prove he still has what it takes to walk among Philly’s finest. So he’s pissed to be stuck on a cushy security assignment for the DA’s office . . . until he gets a good look at the sweet, straitlaced intern he’s supposed to protect—but not touch.
Tess Newart recognizes Curran instantly. How could she not? Back in college she tied this former frat boy to the bed with her argyle socks! That sizzling one-night stand was the only indiscretion Tess ever allowed herself. She has survived law school so far, despite being pushed to succeed by her overbearing father. Now that she’s interning on a major case against a ruthless crime boss, she won’t jeopardize her career by giving in to temptation again. She just never expected temptation to look so damn hot in uniform.
Tess knows her father has other plans for her, and they don’t include Curran. But soon she’s falling for him all over again. And when danger emerges, Curran will prove just how good a bad-boy cop can be.
If you’ve been following Cecy Robson’s Shattered Past series, you may have remembered being introduced to a huge ass Irish family in the third book, Once Pure. Killian O’Brien and his entire brood grew up across the street from the Santos family, as in Teo, Lety, and Killian’s love, Sophia. And if you remember, these O’Briens are a hoot (oh the attitude on Wren)!
I was thrilled to see that Ms. Robson started a sort of spin-off series focusing on each of the O’Briens. Her first book, Once Kissed, focuses on Curran, the “I have no filter” cop.
Although I don’t remember the book saying this, I think Curran is one of the older brothers. He went to college and now works for the Philadelphia Police Department. He’s done well on the force and has earned teaching spots at the Police Academy. He’s definitely a police officer many cadets want to be.
He’s the last person in the world HE wants to be after leading his rookie partner into a near death situation. After the accident, he’s been relegated to performing protection services to the District Attorney’s office. None to happy about this, he accepts his “punishment”.
And wouldn’t you know it, his charge is a girl from his college days – the one that virtually got away.
Contessa has lived worse than a sheltered life and she’s just trying to stay busy while she buys her time until she’s free from under her daddy’s big fat entitled thumb. Just a few months of law school and one huge, important law case for the Assistant District Attorney and she’ll be free of her father’s puppet strings.
At first I had a hard time getting into the groove of this story. Whiners tend to turn me off. Put two of them at the very beginning of the book and UGH! I’m tossing the book across the room. But I patiently kept reading and it only took until the end of the first and the beginning of the second chapter that Curran was giving Tess two fabulous nicknames: Miss “Let me tie you up so I can ride you hard” and “Argyles?”. Curran does not censor a word that comes out of his mouth and for that he was so much fun to read! He was exactly the kind of “rescue” Tess needed in her life.
I love second chance romances and when you toss in a huge, crazy Irish family with nothing but love for each other… no one stands a chance against the O’Briens. THAT is what made this romance a riotous hit with me. Bring on Declan’s story! Oh you would not believe the mess he’s already gotten himself into 😉
