An immortal assassin is caught between desire and duty...

A foundling raised in a world of humans

Growing up, orphaned Josephine didn’t know who or what she was—just that she was “bad,” an outcast with strange powers. Her baby brother Thaddeus was as perfect as she was flawed; protecting him became her entire life. The day he was taken away began Jo’s transition from angry girl...
to would-be superhero... to enchanting, ruthless villain.

A lethally sensual enforcer on a mission
A threat to the Møriør has brought archer Rune the Baneblood to the mortal realm to slay the oldest living Valkyrie. Whether by bow or in bed, he never fails to eliminate his target. Yet before he can strike, he encounters a vampiric creature whose beauty conceals a black heart. With one bite, she pierces him with aching pleasure, taking his forbidden blood -
and jeopardizing the secrets of his brethren.
A boundless passion that will lead to sweet ruin...

Could this exquisite female be a spy sent by the very Valkyrie he hunts? Rune knows he must not trust Josephine, yet he’s unable to turn her away. Despite his millennia of sexual conquests, he can’t ignore the unfamiliar longing she arouses deep within him.
When Jo betrays the identity of the one man she will die to protect, she and Rune become locked in a treacherous battle of wills that pits ultimate loyalty against unbridled lust.

2015 Fave Beast

Have I been away from paranormal romance (PNR) too long or did I just forget my immense love for the Immortals After Dark series?  There are so many reasons for my severe case of “the book smiles”* while I was reading this book.  I ate up every single page of Jo and Rune’s story.  Ms. Cole has nailed my kind of paranormal romance story and I got everything I expected in a story from her!

First, let me get my disclaimer out of the way:  I am behind in the IAD series.    The last book I read was #6, Dark Desires After Dusk.  A LOT has happened in the NINE books in between!  But some things stay the same; Nix is still “nucking futs Nix”…

Accession is coming and Nix is getting ready for it.  Trust me, this is NOT a spoiler!  This has been on it’s way since the beginning of the series.  It’s a time when all the creatures of Lore come out of the woodwork and clash, make merriment, and generally make a mess of the world they call Gaia, but we know it as Earth.

In this book, we meet Josephine (Jo), a girl who has no clue who and, more importantly, WHAT she is.  She wakes up one day with no memories of the eleven years before that day, with her newborn baby brother to take care of… on her own.  Jo survives foster care using her “supernatural” intimidation tactics and goes to live on the streets raising her baby brother.  Jo is amazing!  This girl is spitfire, lava, deep love and devotion all rolled into one little girl.  She doesn’t waver, she sticks to her principles, and she’s all about shooting first and asking questions later.  LOVE her!!!

Rune is an archer from a group called the Møriør.  He is tasked to end Nix and her precognitive ways.  Rune is the “master of secrets” and he uses whatever means necessary to get those secrets.  While Rune is on the job in New Orleans (aka Lore central at the moment) “collecting” intell, he runs into Jo and she is not impressed with Rune in the least bit.  Oh how the guys fall for these tough girls 😉

“I like a guy with passion.  When you finished back there, I couldn’t tell if you’d gotten your nut or muffled a sneeze.”

Jo is a force to reckon with.  Rune, on the other hand, is flat out an idiot throughout the book and honestly, I hated him for Jo.  But, ya know, the heart wants what the heart wants.  And eventually Rune comes around.

With characters like Nix running amok and Ms. Cole’s super fantastical imagination for characters with powers that are beyond amazing, I still gave this book a resounding five stars!  Easily one of my favorites of the year.

Jeez, I need to get caught up on this series.  I’ve forgotten how HOT she writes her PNR…. sizzling!

Do you want to read the extended excerpt?  It’s HERE and its beautifully formatted just like the book.  Check it out!

I love PNR! Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark and JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood are my favorite series.

  2. Maria Malaveci

If you win this one, it would be a great place to start, although Cole is on the HOT side 😉 But this series is heavy on kick butt heroines (YAY!!)

  3. I just finished the audio of this book this morning. I so loved it too. I forgot how much I missed this series. You hadn’t met Thad before this book, but those of us who were caught up, have know him for a few books now and it was great to see baby Thad. Glad you enjoyed it. Now I will crack the whip at you to go back and get caught up. And I can’t recommend the audiobooks enough, Robert Petkoff is one of my favorites.

I KNOW, I feel totally ashamed about the series that have gotten away from me – you’ve totally inspired me to write a post about it b/c I can show all the books I freaking OWN that I haven’t read – it’s really sad. COLE is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I am super excited to read this one!! I love this series, but I do need to get caught up on it!! I plan on reading Dark Skye soon, which is the book previous to this one and then as soon as Sweet Ruin becomes available at my local library I will be reading it for sure.

Jeez, I should of just gave you my copy… hmmmmm… want my ARC??? I know you’re good for it (ie. won’t put into the wrong hands 😉 Let me know (email me kclifton69@gmail.com – I’m sending a whole gaggle of boxes of books out anyways).

It could be standalone BUT you know how those go when you try and read those when they are a part of a series – you miss the nuances that make the books so much more. I will tell you this, you won’t be spoiled for earlier books (exception may be Thad but even that’s not so bad) if you like Kresley Cole’s style and want to read her books. I recommend checking out her excerpt and/ reading a free preview of one of her first books – it’s a toss up between The Warlord Wants Forever and A Hunger Like No Other (one is a novella, one isn’t). Dang, that’s a lot of info…
