Top 10 Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2016

I’m really bad about finding the upcoming books.  I rely on the librarian webinars I attend for my upcoming young adult books I want to read.  Otherwise, I look through Goodreads’ lists of upcoming books and publicist emails.  I feel like sometimes that just isn’t enough.  I was recently putting together a mass market / trade paperback buy list for the first half of 2016 for our Tech Services Department Head and I used the catalogs in Edelweiss.  But who knows if I found everything?  I know what the patrons read and want but who knows if I’ve missed the next great read.  I guess someone will ask for it then…  But I digress!

In no particular order…

A Gathering of Shadows

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

February 23rd, 2016

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

This is the number ONE book I’m waiting for!!!  This story can’t come soon enough.

Red Hot RainRed Hot Rain by Rachel Caine (cover not final)

July 2016

RED HOT RAIN starts a few years after the end of TOTAL ECLIPSE, in a world that seems to finally be settled. Mother Earth isn’t mad at us. The Djinn have kissed and made up (sometimes literally) with the Wardens, and the two sides work together to solve whatever problems do arise. All good, right?

When Joanne Baldwin first hears about a freak monster storm that destroys the rebuilding community of Lubbock, Texas, she takes a personal trip to find out what’s going on. Problem is, seems like it’s exactly as it appears: a freak natural occurrence.

But when the same kind of storm tears a killer swath across the country to follow her home, and all her Warden powers can’t put a dent in it, it’s clear there’s more to this storm front than physics. Soon, Joanne’s embroiled in a deadly struggle against a mysterious, powerful opponent, and her husband David–most powerful of the Djinn–seems strangely unhelpful against whatever’s coming for her. Even Lewis, her long-time friend and ally, now an otherworldly consort to Mother Earth herself, doesn’t seem inclined (or able) to help. Someone’s got the mother of all grudges against Joanne Baldwin, and they’re coming at her hard.

And not just her. Joanne’s not just fighting for her own life. It’s coming for her son, too.

It’ll be up to Joanne to save herself and her son from the storm that’s coming for them … a storm that wants to erase Joanne Baldwin and everyone she loves from the face of the earth.

Another Weather Warden novel!  I backed this on Kickstarter so I’m all set to receive this come July!  And some of my goodies have already arrived!

My Lady Jane

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows

June 7th, 2016

Lady Jane Grey, sixteen, is about to be married to a total stranger—and caught up in an insidious plot to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But that’s the least of Jane’s problems. She’s about to become Queen of England. Like that could go wrong.

Humor.  Humor.  Humor.

IntotheDimInto the Dim by Janet B. Taylor

March 1st, 2016

When fragile, sixteen-year-old Hope Walton loses her mom to an earthquake overseas, her secluded world crumbles. Agreeing to spend the summer in Scotland, Hope discovers that her mother was more than a brilliant academic, but also a member of a secret society of time travelers. Trapped in the twelfth century in the age of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Hope has seventy-two hours to rescue her mother and get back to their own time. Along the way, her path collides with that of a mysterious boy who could be vital to her mission . . . or the key to Hope’s undoing.

I like this cover better than the new one I’ve seen on Goodreads so I’m resolutely using this one ∗harumph∗.  This book looks EPIC.

Titans by Victoria Scott

February 23rd, 2016

Ever since the Titans first appeared in her Detroit neighborhood, Astrid Sullivan’s world has revolved around the mechanical horses. She and her best friend have spent countless hours watching them and their jockeys practice on the track. It’s not just the thrill of the race. It’s the engineering of the horses and the way they’re programmed to seem so lifelike. The Titans are everything that fascinates Astrid, and nothing she’ll ever touch.

She hates them a little, too. Her dad lost everything betting on the Titans. And the races are a reminder of the gap between the rich jockeys who can afford the expensive machines to ride, and the working class friends and neighbors of Astrid’s who wager on them.

But when Astrid’s offered a chance to enter an early model Titan in this year’s derby, well, she decides to risk it all. Because for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, it’s more than a chance at fame or money. Betting on herself is the only way she can see to hang on to everyone in the world she cares about.

It’s not like you set any book in Detroit and I’ll be drooling for it.  But this one has freakin’ mechanical horses!  And it speaks of the Detroit’s precarious economy.  And there’s freakin’ mechanical horses!

Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman

February 9th, 2016

Blackbeard the pirate was known for striking fear in the hearts of the bravest of sailors. But once he was just a young man who dreamed of leaving his rigid life behind to chase adventure in faraway lands. Nothing could stop him—until he met the one girl who would change everything.

Edward “Teach” Drummond, son of one of Bristol’s richest merchants, has just returned from a year-long journey on the high seas to find his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and sick of the high society he was born into, Teach dreams only of returning to the vast ocean he’d begun to call home. There’s just one problem: convincing his father to let him leave and never come back.

Following her parents’ deaths, Anne Barrett is left penniless and soon to be homeless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne is forced to take a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks, and Anne longs for escape. How will she ever realize her dream of sailing to Curaçao—where her mother was born—when she’s stuck in England?

From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn to each other, they’re trapped by society and their own circumstances. Faced with an impossible choice, they must decide to chase their dreams and go, or follow their hearts and stay.

“… set the world ablaze.” ???  Sign me up!  I actually love backstories.

All Closed Off by Cora Carmack

Stella Santos is fine.

Maybe something terrible happened to her that she can’t even remember. And maybe it drives her crazy when her friends treat her like she’s on the verge of breaking because of it. Maybe it feels even worse when they do what she asks and pretend that it never happened at all. And maybe she’s been getting harassing emails and messages for months from people who don’t even know her, but hate her all the same.

But none of that matters because she’s just fine.

For Ryan Blake, Stella was always that girl. Vibrant and hilarious and beautiful. He wanted her as his best friend. His more than friends. His everything and anything that she would give him. Which these days is a whole lot of nothing. She gets angry when he’s there. Angry when he’s not there. Angry when he tries to talk and when he doesn’t.

When Stella devises an unconventional art project for one of her classes all about exploring intimacy—between both friends and strangers—Ryan finds himself stepping in as guinea pig after one of her subjects bails. What was supposed to be an objective and artistic look at emotion and secrets and sex suddenly becomes much more personal. When he hits it off with another girl from the project, Stella will have to decide if she’s willing to do more than make art about intimacy. To keep him, she’ll have to open up and let herself be the one thing she swore she’d never be again.

Stella’s story.  Enough said…

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

January 5th, 2015

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.

In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.

Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.

Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.

Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

I’ll be really surprised if I don’t see this on anyone’s else’s list.  This book has been a long time in the making (just check out Susan’s Pinterest page!) and I will spending my good Christmas money on this book.  I love this Michigan author to pieces – she is so amazingly nice!

Fighting Dirty

Fighting Dirty by Lori Foster

February 23, 2016

With the life he’s led and the muscles he’s gained, Armie Jacobson isn’t afraid of anything. Except maybe Merissa Colter’s effect on him. It’s not just that she’s his best friend’s little sister. Fact is, she deserves better. Women pursue him for one night of pleasure, and that’s all he wants to offer. Until rescuing Merissa from a robbery leads to the most erotic encounter of his life.

Good girl meets bad boy. It’s a story that rarely ends well. But Merissa is taking matters into her own hands. No matter how he views himself, the Armie she knows is brave, honorable and completely loyal. And as past demons and present-day danger collide, they’re both about to learn what’s truly worth fighting for…

Finally, FINALLY we get Army and Merissa’s story!!  These two have been dancing forever and it has been hot!  I can’t wait to start this one!!!

The Score

The Score by Elle Kennedy

January 11th, 2016

He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she’s going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to befriends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

I really wish I was on Elle Kennedy’s radar and I received ARCs from her.  But oh, what a shame, I’ll just have to support this awesome author and BUY her books! 😀

Thank you for visiting my lists this week!

On a side note, I didn’t get around to everyone’s lists yet because besides getting ready for Christmas, I got attacked by a completely different migraine than I’m used to getting (what the hell is this vertigo?) and it scared the every lovin’ crap out of me.  Don’t worry, I’m all better, but I lost a whole day because of it!!!  ∗grumble, grumble, getting old sucks dishwater, grumble, grumble

About Kristin

Kristin has to ensure she gets her minimal requirement of "happily ever after" books in between those books that contain cliffhangers and never-ending story arcs. It's for her family's sake. When not reading, she's homeshooling her 10-year old son, watching cartoons on TV, or taking a nap.

    • I luckily caught Rachel’s Kickstarter b/c I’m on her email list…. phew! For $10 I’ve gotten an awesome signed print, 2 out of 5 novellas, the ebook when it comes out, character cards, and my name in the acknowledgements. So worth it considering my mad love for the series!

  1. You have a fabulous list here!! I really am excited for Cora Cormacks book (I had no clue she had a new one coming out so I am going to add that to my GR list). And Yeah pretty excited for Fighting Dirty. Should be a good one. Usually I rely mostly on Goodreads lists for the upcoming releases as well as fictfact which has a book release calendar. Hope you enjoy all of these when you read them and hope you have a fabulous reading year in 2016.
