Review: The Score by Elle Kennedy (plus The Deal & The Mistake)

Posted February 16, 2016 in Review / 14 Comments

I am officially addicted to Elle Kennedy’s writing.  She writes good 😉

Seriously, though, I had her Off-Campus series in my Top Ten books of 2015.  Each book has been worth every cent I paid for it, probably more.

Since I bought these books, I was lazy about writing my reviews of these stories.  After enjoying the third book so much, I knew I just had to say something about each of them!  I actually went back and re-read the first two books in preparation for these reviews.

I’m starting off my post with the most recent entry in the Off-Campus series, The Score.

He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

Dean Di-Laurentis has got to be the worst “player” of the bunch of guys known as the Briar University Men’s Hockey Team.  This guy loves sex and is unapologetic about it.  He’s been known to be having sex in one form or another in the middle of parties during the first two Off-Campus books.  So us readers of the series have known and “loved” Dean for quite a while.

In The Score, we get Allie’s break-up story, which is a huge relief for me.  In the first book, The Deal, we met Allie as Hannah’s roommate with the boyfriend.  Allie would often be arguing with her boyfriend and it turned into an on-and-off relationship.  By this third book, Allie has had enough.  Her and her boyfriend want two completely different things in the future so she’s not bothering with trying to make their relationship work anymore.  There’s no point.

I thought that was an awesome way to set up the story because it showed that Allie was not a girl who was going to ever get walked on.  We went through the breakup with her and witnessed her trying to stay strong and not take the schmuck back.  So when she shows up at Dean’s house to “hide out” for a weekend, we already know she’s a tough cookie and she’s going to take in the “scene” she walks in on and stride.  Allie rocks!!

I love stories where the manwhore gets put in his place by the girl.  This is one of those stories.  It’s well written, it shows a girl who is comfortable with her sexuality, and we have a ton of character growth to witness through trials and tribulations.

Oh, and there might be some hot sex and romance in there somewhere 😉

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy...

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

...and it’s going to be oh so good.

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Remember, this was the first book I read in the series and I wrote this blurb waaaay back when…

The first book in the Off-Campus series literally blew me away.  I had a hard time rating this book, though.  I was surprised by how much “story” there was to this seemingly innocuous little overdone trope about trying to make another guy jealous… or to at least put the girl on the guy’s radar.

But on the other hand, do I lose cred because I couldn’t find a fault in the writing, plot growth (it’s ebb and flow, mind you), dialogue, or the satisfying ending? Do I dig or make up faults? Nah… a solid 5 star in my book.

I think Ms. Kennedy gives new adult a fresh breath of DEPTH to the new adult genre… thank you, ma’am!!

He's a player in more ways than one…

College junior John Logan can get any girl he wants. For this hockey star, life is a parade of parties and hookups, but behind his killer grins and easygoing charm, he hides growing despair about the dead-end road he'll be forced to walk after graduation. A sexy encounter with freshman Grace Ivers is just the distraction he needs, but when a thoughtless mistake pushes her away, Logan plans to spend his final year proving to her that he's worth a second chance.

Now he's going to need to up his game…

After a less than stellar freshman year, Grace is back at Briar University, older, wiser, and so over the arrogant hockey player she nearly handed her V-card to. She's not a charity case, and she's not the quiet butterfly she was when they first hooked up. If Logan expects her to roll over and beg like all his other puck bunnies, he can think again. He wants her back? He'll have to work for it. This time around, she'll be the one in the driver's seat, and she plans on driving him wild.

Okay, who the hell shows up at a girl’s dorm room door the morning after a botched make-out session just to put things to rights?  Apparently hockey player John Logan does and he does it to a Freshman, no less!  A Freshman he accidentally dropped in on while trying to find his friend’s dorm room one night.

I will say this about this book: the synopsis makes the story sound like Grace leaves for Paris near the beginning of the book and it just doesn’t happen that way.  It happens closer to the middle or 3/4’s of the way into the story.

This thing I adored most about this story was the unique storyline of being in love with your bestfriend’s girlfriend and how to get over it.  Do you “use” somebody to do it?  Hmmmmm…  Ms. Kennedy was brilliant in the solution to this dilemma!  Just read the book…

    • I thought the same thing but don’t most second books fall short!! The Deal was SO surprisingly original and DAMN good – it was hard to follow that!! 🙂

  1. I have read nothing but glowing reviews for this series and I have grabbed the first one to read soon. I need something light, fluffy and funny and I need something to restore my faith in the NA genre.

  2. Another one of my friends has literally drilled it into to me to read this series. I was in the need for some steamy NA books and I think I should finally make that a priority this year. Great review, Kristin. 🙂

  3. I am IN LOVE with this series!! I bought the first two ebooks and after loving The Deal so much, I ended up buying the paperback! I just love it so much! When I got The Score for review, I stopped every reading I was doing to jump into it and gosh, it was a relief to see Elle having her magic touch for writing. The story was so funny and the character growth for both MC’s was great. I was so happy Allie was done with Sean *gags*. I really didn’t like him. He was so ughhhh. Annoying!
The Deal GETS ALL OF THE STARS!!!! There was nothing wrong with it! Perfection!!! Garrett is book boyfriend #1!!
The Mistake actually brought me to tears in one chapter because of Logan and I rarely cry over a character so for me to shed tears and over a guy in his POV, I was surprised and it showed how invested I was in the story and how fantastic Elle’s writing it.

I think my ratings are the same as yours for all three books!
