I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
A novel of suspense that explores the complexities of marriage and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love. When you read this book, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are reading about a jealous wife and her obsession with her replacement. You will assume you are reading about a woman about to enter a new marriage with the man she loves. You will assume the first wife was a disaster and that the husband was well rid of her.You will assume you know the motives, the history, the anatomy of the relationships.Assume nothing.
Discover the next blockbuster novel of suspense, and get ready for the read of your life.
THE WIFE BETWEEN US is the debut novel of co-authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. Hendricks, a former book editor with a major New York publishing house, lives in Manhattan with her family. Pekkanen, the author of seven bestselling solo novels, lives in Maryland with her three sons. THE WIFE BETWEEN US has been sold in 30 countries and optioned for film by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners. It is a Book of the Month Club Pick, an Amazon Best Book of the Month, and an Indie Next Pick. Hendricks and Pekkanen are currently at work on their next novel, also a psychological thriller.
Outside of my normal type of reads, I decided to take a chance on the much hyped The Wife Between Us. Normally, this would be a recipe for disaster, right? But in this case, it was a huge WIN for me because holy moth balls!! This story rocked in so many ways. I was addicted, shocked, blown away, and most importantly, entertained. Maybe my tastes in suspense are simple but I really loved this twisty mystery.
We first meet Nellie, a young teacher living in New York City working two jobs to make ends meet. We get to know her and learn how she’s getting ready to marry Richard, the near perfect boyfriend whom she met on a plane ride from Florida to New York City.
In an alternate point of view, we meet Vanessa, a broken woman who’s trying (okay, not really) to get her life together. She lives with her Aunt Charlotte in New York City and works at Saks Fifth Avenue as a sales associate. But Vanessa’s focus has become fixated on Richard’s new fiance and stopping his upcoming nuptials.
I had no preconceived notions, no ideas, no clue about what was going to happen and I’m so glad I did. As the story unfolded, I was so delightfully entertained that I could not put the book down! Short chapters, the alternating points of view, and descriptive, well-written scenes kept my attention.
Both Hendricks and Pekkanen do a fantastic job on character development and depth. Nellie, Vanessa, and Richard’s personalities unfolded WITH the story but you also have strong supporting characters that you can’t help loving and wanting to see more of. My favorite? Aunt Charlotte, duh!
If you can, try to avoid the reading the full reviews of this book because I’ve seen some reviews that have given away some of the “reveals” in the story. And yes, you could sit there and think of all the possible ways the story could unfold but my advice? Just let it happen and you’ll be happier for it. This is a fun, fast read. Great for a crappy weather weekend when you’re hiding in the house 🙂
